Thoughts Mostly Unrelated

Just finished re-reading Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series again. If you haven’t read them, go out & get them, or make friends with someone who has.

--

Farmer’s markets are good things. Food is supposed to smell like food. I bought some apples that taste like apples, and not like Styrofoam.

--

I bought the best thing for a dollar this week. It’s a Lego man in a little car. The great thing is that he is wearing a pith helmet. And has a hood for his left hand. And he has a dueling scar. And a monocle. And a villainy mustache. I think he’s evil.

--

Today may be a perfect fall day.

--

Topic for discussion: Name a book, music, movie, & misc. that everyone needs to read, listen to, watch, and experience. I’ll go first. The afore-mentioned Sandman series, An Irish Evening--The Chieftains & Friends, Garden State, and sitting on the beach on a warm night in July, watching falling stars and talking with a friend about everything and nothing.

--

Here is a story:

One day, Brent & I were doing something at work that involved us driving in and out of the parking ramps. This alone was good, as it got us out of doing whatever mind-numbing, pointless tasks were would have otherwise been doing, but it got better. We had finished, and were driving back to the main ramp to get back to the above-mentioned tedium, when It’s The End of the World as We Know It came on the radio. We instantly decided that we needed to do a security check of the ramp (security check=waste time driving around the ramps pretending to look for scofflaws and ne’er-do-wells), and sped off, jamming out to the song. It was our way of sticking it to the man, our defiant cry of rebellion, of proving that, no matter what sort of hell we would go through to collect a paycheck, it was still within our power, and, indeed, was our right as hard-working, lazy shiftless workers, to, if however briefly, waste time hanging out with a friend and listening to devil rock-&-roll music, AND TO GET PAID FOR IT!

This story owes a dept of extreme gratitude to Brent, for being there, to Lisa, for making the mix tape that brought it to mind recently, and to the extreme run-on sentence. Without them, none of this would be possible.

On the Topic for Discussion:

Book: An Open Life - The Campell-Toms Interviews. Probably a better read than the Campbel-Moyers interviews. This is more of a conversation between friends and really shows Joseph a a man rather than some Icon.

Music: Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel. DM's new album is fantastic. Though it's all new material, it spans in sound from that of their early days to their newer concepts. Worth a listen for old and new fans.

Movie: Batman Begins. I resisted seeing it since the last incarnations of the caped crusader sucked so bad I think they gave me cancer! But curiosity got the better of me and I gave this movie a chance and I wasn't dissapointed at all. A great take on Ol'Bats and I would definitly like to see a sequel.

Misc: Something that I think everyone should experience is life. The act of living no just merely being alive but stopping and watching it happen around you. At a party or gathering take a mental step back and watch it happen. Standing in line at the store watch the people in line with you. Go to a movie and watch the audience instead of the film. Don't judge, guess, or rationalize what you see just experience it. It will effect you in some way noticeable or not, long term or temporary it doesn't matter.

still not doing homework....

Book: sometimes a great notion, kesey really does great character description, and it's the only book i can remember reading right now.

Music: right now i'm stuck on patsy cline. her music is pretty squeaky clean by today's standards, yet oh so tortured, which appeals to my emo side. and it's easy to sing in the car.

Movie: mind blank. can't think. the last one i watched was 'talk to her' a spanish film about men taking care of women in comas. definitely worth watching.

Misc: living in the dorms or a big communal living situation. you will likely hate it, but it is an experience like no other.

Patsy Cline is great for listening to in the car. When no one else is there. And singing really loudly. And watching a sunset. And just letting the emotions take over...

Book: The Great and Secret Show by Clive Barker; older and strange, but very engrossing.

Music: La Luna - Sarah Brightman; never used to like the stuff, but this is transporting.

Movie: Sabrina - NOT Harrison Ford, but Humphrey Bogart, William Holden and Audrey Hepburn.

Misc: Get the friends over, put on some old big-band or swing music, and play Texas Hold 'Em

The Great and Secret Show is great book but it's a total cliffhanger and the sequel/conclusion, Everville, is a total letdown. TGASS is a good read in and of itself but as far Clive goes I'd say The Thief of Always or Cabal would be a much better ride.

the must-do list

(Link)

Book: "Guns, Germs, and Steel: the fates of human societies" by Jared Diamond. Why did the Europeans conquer the Africans and Americans and not the other way around? It's all geography. Brilliant yet accessible.

Movie: "Sin City" Cheesy, disjointed, yet possibly the most beautifully shot movie I've ever seen. Every frame looks like a well inked panel from a top-notch comic book.

TV show: Sigh...go ahead, question my masculinity. I have started to appreciate the "Gilmore Girls." The quick banter has that Aaron Sorkin/ Kevin Smith feel to it. Yes, the rest of it is a cheesy WB type soap opera, but there is some genuinely appreciable humor and the girls are HOT.

I think I have to go watch a football game now.

Experience: Having someone who's opinion you greatly respect tell you earnestly that they are proud of you. Think about how often any of us actually hear those words. We know that our parents and friends feel that way, but it's something else to hear it. To me, they're more powerful than "I love you." Tell someone today, and tell them what you're proud of them for.

Gilmore Girls?

I question your sexuality. Banter shmanter, you are developing vaginitis and are given three (3) Princess Points. Now go curl up on the sofa with a soft blanket and a bag of Milano cookies and cry at the end of Ghost, ye great southern pansy.

Seriously...

Book: One book?!? You want me to name just one? Um... Right now I'm re-reading Midori Snyder's Oran Trilogy (New Moon, Sadar's Keep, Beldan's Fire). Those three plus The Blue Sword, by Robin McKinley, are the books I read and re-read when I want female heroes.

Music: the Mediaeval Baebes, either Worldes Blysse (1998) or Undrentide (2000). Incredible female vocal harmony.

Movie: Not my strong suit at all. I can think of movies I've enjoyed, but I can't think of one I'd say people really ought to see. I think I've been affected by Mairi's penchant for watching her Wiggles DVD over and over...

Misc. something that everyone needs to experience: Giving birth to and raising something -- a child, a painting or drawing, a story or poem, a song -- seeing the effects your choices have and the ways in which you have no effect whatsoever.

The List

(Link)

Book: Anything Terry Pratchett. I debated answering this way, it being the predictable answer, but the hell with it. His books have entertained me and made me think more than any other.

Music: Breathe (2 a.m.). It's kind of a girly song, but I like the sentiment that as much as you may wish for it, you can never go back. This may get me Princess Points, but when Sam tells Molly that you take the love with you...gimme a moment and pass that bag of cookies.

Movie: Big Fish. There is magic in the world. It just travels backwards in time. It wasn't there the first time you lived the moment, but it can be every time afterwards.

Misc: Being pampered for a day, then in turn pampering someone else for a day. And by pampered I mean every wish that can be is met and exceeded. Both are good days. Strangely enough, the day where you are pampered is often the more difficult one.

book: Right now, I'm really into the Series of Unfortunate Events (lemony Snicket). There very fun books. I dare you to try to read just one and then stop. Maybe you can, but I couldn't...

music: That's always been a touchy subject for me. The things I enjoy, other people often find dumb/cheesy/too mushy/etc. But I will always go for a song that has real heart in it. If the singer is not willing to bear his or her soul to the world, then what are they doing singing?

For some great storytelling/singing, listen to Harry Chapin. He's got the best/saddest songs you may ever hear.

movie: Obviously, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I know, it's almost cliché to say it. But if you're looking for movies that everyone needs to watch, these are the ones. Of course, it may spoil you for any other movie...

misc: For what everyone needs to experience, I'm going to have to borrow Will's answer: "sitting on the beach on a warm night in July, watching falling stars and talking with a friend about everything and nothing." There is, in fact, nothing better in the world.
